  • Put in your name, email address and password. Make a note of the password.

  • Write an informative bio, with a link to something other than your website – a blog or facebook page for example.
  • If you have a real world shop, input a location.
  • Insert your website.

What to Post

  • Post in moderation. 5 a day max.
  • Post special offers and consider creating a Twitter specific discount voucher for your followers.
  • Retweet selected, excellent posts that your followers may be interested in.
  • Post a combination of marketing and non marketing material.

Getting Followers

  • Find people. You can find people using Followerwonk‘s free version, or Twitter’s search function.
  • Follow people in the same industry, people who might be interested in your product / service, people in your town.
  • Add a Twitter button to your marketing literature, emails and facebook page, so people can sign up easily.
  • Add personal friends (if they are mature and responsible).
  • Participate in your community.

Building Community

  • Do retweet  – especially from people you wish to connect with.
  • Do Follow Fridays – i.e. #FF @targetcustomer @supplier @client
  • Mix it up. there’s no point in re-connecting with the same people.
  • Look for free networking in your local area.
  • See if there is a local tweetup group where you can meet other, local businesses – for example in Lancaster, Jane Binnion and the Lancaster Ethical Small Traders Association have collaborated to create a Lancaster Tweetup group.
