Many of my friends have their own businesses, but aren’t at the stage where they can afford to hire someone to do their marketing. They ask what they can do. Rather than give everyone a free consultation / lesson (which would take up all my time and prevent me from earning a living) I give people quick tips, the first of which is – read. Read, read, read. Don’t take everything as verbatim – a lot of SEO blogs engage in speculation rather than research. That said, here are some recommended SEO blogs to start you off:

  1. SEO Moz. A personal favourite, this is a blog with multiple contributors, divided into helpful sections, like ‘SEO Process’, ‘Measuring & Testing SEO’ etc. They also have some free documents for learning SEO.
  2. Search Engine Roundtable. Written mainly by Barry Schwartz, this blog is particularly useful for keeping track of Google updates and how they have / might affect your site. It also has some valuable info on SERPs other than Google.
  3. SEO Book. An interesting blog mainly written by Aaron Wall and Eric Covino. A little more cynical than the other two and a great source of information for Google’s latest shenanigans. They offer some great free tools for signing up to their newsletter.
  4. I Love SEO. I really enjoy Gianluca Fiorelli’s posts and I would suggest you follow him on Twitter too, because he retweets excellent work by others.
  5. Google: Official Blog. Not earth shattering SEO advice, but useful for getting insight into how Google works and which updates they have loosed upon the world this month.

I hope this helps. If you decided you’d rather pay someone to do your SEO, get in touch today.
