As two subcultures equally marginalized from the mainstream, Geeks and Hipsters should have a lot in common. One fundamental difference, though, sets them leagues apart. Geeks are hopeful. Hipsters are world weary. Geeks look toward an ever-changing future. Hipsters take their cues from a revisionist past. Geeks sport those hearts on their sleeves as though those hearts are medals of honor, while Hipsters hide their love lights under layers of ennui.
Technology is the driving force behind Geekdom. Geeks love applications of pure science whether they’re embodied in practical gadgets, like solar-powered laptop computer battery chargers, or in myth, like “Star Wars” or “Star Trek.” Geeks are not much into personal style, particularly when style is expressed through clothing choices.
Social justice is the Hipster cause célèbre. All political struggles in the Hipster universe come down to Us Vs. Them. Hipsters love clothes and will spend hours picking out just the right blue skinny jeans from a closet filled with 20 pairs of blue skinny jeans.
